ESSENTIAL QUESTION:
How do text features enhance your understanding of the text?
OBJECTIVE:
Students will be able to identify text features in order to construct meaning from the text.
POWER STANDARD:
Identify and explain the contributions of text features to meaning.
SKILLS AND PROCESSES:
6A.2.a - Identify the characteristics of informational texts such as print feature aids and text feature aids.
6A.2.b -Review the text by examining features such as the title, pictures, illustrations, photographs, charts, timelines, and graphs

RI.5.7. Draw on information from multiple print or digital sources, demonstrating the ability to locate an answer to a question quickly or to solve a problem efficiently.

VOCABULARY:
Text Feature - An important feature of literacy and informational text that helps the reader make meaning of the text.
PRE-TEST: Allow students no more than 30 minutes to complete the pre-test.
HOOK/MOTIVATOR:
Have the students turn to page 108 in History Alive. Then have them identify the text features that they see on that page. Place their answers on an anchor chart.
PROCEDURE:
  1. Handout the pre-test and allow students no more than 30 minutes to complete the pre-test.
  2. Have the students turn to page 108 in History Alive. Display the scanned page of the text on your projector screen and use the ActivInspire software (ActivSlate works well for this if you have one) to highlight and note the text features the students can identify.
  3. Present the Text Feature Power Point to the students.
  4. Distribute the Text Feature Notebook to the students.
  5. Based on your hook and motivator decide whether or not the notebook should be completed independently or with assistance.
  6. If the students complete the notebook on their own go over the answers, and make sure the students have an understanding of the features and their purpose.
  7. Explain that their Exit Pass for this lesson will be their Distance Learning Connection. They will need to find a text feature, either in printed material or online and post a description of the text feature to the Lesson 1 wikispace and give a brief explanation of how their text feature helped them understand the text. Give the students 1-2 nights to complete this assignment.
CLOSURE:
Distance Learning Connection/Exit Pass: They will need to find a text feature, either in printed material or online of a text feature to your website or class blog and give a brief explanation of what their text feature is and how their text feature helped them understand the text. Give the students 1-2 nights to complete this assignment.
